Features of software business in the Russian backwoods. Part II – The creation of «SautinSoft» company.

The creation of «SautinSoft» company

When we were children we lived in the Soviet Union. That was the socialist country divided from the Western capitalist states with boarders and informational barrier. That barrier was called “Iron Curtain”. We didn’t have Coca-Cola, game consoles, smart clothes and glossy magazines. We have not seen a good deal of achievements of civilization which were common in Western countries!

In 1985 Michael Gorbachev became the leader of the USSR, who decided to modernize the country and dared to open it for the West. That period remained in the history of Russia under the name of “Perestroika”, it means the reconstruction. It was the epoch of big changes, daylight and open-mindedness. The demolition of the Berlin wall symbolized the final fall of “Iron Curtain”. In the early 90s, when the dissolution of the USSR occurred, the new goods begin appearing and some of them we had even never heard of before.  Our country was overcoming the years lost in stagnation and was changing and developing rapidly.

It was the time when the new generation hungrily absorbed the new knowledge, trends and tendencies!  In our stores appeared first computers, and we finally learned what is and how does look a personal computer.

That time, being the pupil of the 5th Form of secondary school I first come across a computer and I was “taken ill” for many years.  The first PC devices were rather expensive and not affordable for a people with a modest earnings.  My parents were having a small family business that included two devices: the first for production of candy-floss and the second – for pop-corn.  Their cherished dream was to purchase a second-hand car ‘Lada’, and they saved up almost all their money for fulfilling their little dream.

However, instead of purchasing the car, my parents decided to buy me a personal computer. I still remember that awesome day when they presented me that wonderful gift and I am so grateful to them!

I’ve started with a simple tasks on programming, gradually switching from simple programs to more complex problems. It was especially interesting for me to create a simple computer games.  :)

After a few years of programming at home I’ve had a some storage of knowledge and skills in the area of programming. And I was liked to help my classmates and friend to solve any computer problems. Next I gave up my hobby for a rather long period to devote my spare time to mopeds and motorbikes. Schoolboys are so inconstant creatures, and they want to take all from their lives. You know, that bikes, girls, speed, fresh air streaming into your face and adrenaline are so needed at this age…  :)

After school I stood before the choice what university to enter. And the most difficult decision to take was the choice of a special subject. In Russia as well as in the Western countries taking decision about future profession is very important and it may influence your whole life.  In 1999 I entered Izhevsk State University and chose  «Programming of Data Processing Machines» as a special subject.

The years of studies were passing fast and implacably! During the second year of studying I started thinking of my future ways of earning my living. The question was not too simple, because the decent work in our town might be found only either on the local plant or with the help of good acquaintances, who were able to become protégés for promoting to the state service.

Being an ordinary student of the second year I took a great interest in programming again. Also English language became one of my favorite subjects. With the help of those so important for the programmer skills I made some progress and decided that creation of useful and advanced problems is my vocation.

What point I should start from? This question had tormented me for a long time before at last I came into my parents’ office.

That period of time they were helping students to find information for scientific papers in the Internet. They were searching information applicable to papers, copied the content of the page into the clipboard, and then they paste it into the text file of Word. And it was made manually without any automation. The problem was that they were badly needed in convenient and functional program which could convert pages of scientific papers from the «html» format into the «rtf» format of Word, doing that fast and in a quality manner!

I got down to that interesting business! I read and re-read mountains of literature, I sat before the computer all days and nights long, I entered into details of html and rtf formats, trying to understand their structures… And I had done that! Few weeks later the first version of program, which I called “HTMLtoRTF Converter”, was ready and it was given to my parents for testing.

Namely that time should be considered the starting point of foundation and development of one of progressive and successful company «SautinSoft».

The first site named «Sautin.com» had been found by January of year 2002, and in March of the same year the first selling was held!

P.S. By the way my first program, which name is “HTMLtoRTF Converter v.1.1” is free for accessing, and its downloading on the site sautin.com is absolutely free of charge!
